Lagos field guides

Getting started

What Lagos Car Dealers is, what it costs, and how an account works.

What is Lagos Car Dealers?

A marketplace for used and new cars in Lagos. Sellers and dealers list their cars, buyers find them, and the two of you talk in Messages, right here. We are the listing and the search, not the middleman: we do not hold your money, inspect the car, or take part in the conversation.

What we do run: phone-confirmed seller accounts, moderation that holds listings when something is off, a report control on every listing, Lagos field guides for the parts of a deal we cannot see, and paid placement for sellers who want more eyes on a car.

Is it free to use?

Browsing, contacting sellers and listing a car are free. Two things are paid: being Featured (weekly or monthly, per car) and dealer plans for lots with more than one car. Both are free until 31 January 2027; the list prices apply after that.

Do I need an account to browse or contact a seller?

Search, shortlist and compare work without signing in. To message a seller, list a car, feature it, or use Studio, sign in with your phone number: one SMS code, no password.

How do I create an account or sign in?

With your Nigerian phone number. Enter it, receive a six-digit code by SMS, type it in. There is no password to remember. The code expires after ten minutes and you can request up to five codes in ten minutes.

Your email or number is confirmed the moment the code is accepted, and every listing you publish shows "Phone confirmed" to buyers.

Can I have more than one account?

One account per phone number. A dealer with several people selling can list every car under one dealer account; the plan limit is per account, not per person.

How do I delete my account?

You can remove every listing yourself from the dashboard: delete takes a car off the site immediately. There is no self-serve button yet to close the account itself; message support from your registered number and we close it and remove your profile. We say this plainly rather than hiding a button that does not exist.

Buying a car

Finding the right car, keeping track of it, and reaching the seller.

Can I save a search and see what is new?

Yes. On Browse, "Save this search" keeps the current filters on your device. When you come back, each saved search re-runs quietly and shows "+N new" for cars it has not shown you before. The count is real: it is computed by diffing listing ids, not by guessing.

Saved searches live in your browser, not in your account, so they do not follow you to another phone. We do not send alerts or notifications; there is no service behind that yet and we will not show a bell until there is.

How do shortlist and compare work?

The heart on any card saves the car to your shortlist; the compare control adds it to a set of up to function() { throw Error("Attempted to call COMPARE_LIMIT() from the server but COMPARE_LIMIT is on the client. It's not possible to invoke a client function from the server, it can only be rendered as a Component or passed to props of a Client Component."); } cars you can lay side by side on one table. Gold marks the best figure in each row (lower price and km, newer year); it is a pointer, not a recommendation. Both live on your device and need no account.

How do I contact a seller?

Tap "Message seller" on the listing. Sign in with your phone if you have not already, write your first message, and the seller replies in Messages (the link in the header). Nobody's phone number is shown: both of you talk here, from accounts confirmed by SMS code.

Ask in writing first: exact mileage, whether the papers are in their name, when you can see the car in daylight. Written answers are a record if something later turns out not to match.

What does "Phone confirmed" mean, and what does it not mean?

It means the seller proved they control that phone number by entering a code we sent to it. It does not mean we have checked their identity, that they own the car, that the papers are genuine, or that the car matches the photos. Those checks are yours to make, and our guides walk through each one.

How do I know if the price is fair?

Compare like with like: same make, model, year band, condition (Tokunbo or Nigerian-used) and mileage band. Use compare to put two or three side by side, and read the pricing guide for what moves a Lagos price and how to negotiate from evidence rather than feeling.

A price far below every comparable car is the most common opening move of a scam. Treat it as a reason to check harder, not a reason to hurry.

Who wrote the listing details, and are they checked?

The seller did. Every listing shows its facts under "What the seller states" and we never restate them as our findings. Moderation holds listings with problems we can see (wrong category, missing or stolen photos, duplicate ads, prices that make no sense), but it is not an inspection of the vehicle.

Safety and protection

Contact is direct and payment is between you and the seller, so protection happens before the chat and around the handover.

Should I pay a deposit, booking fee or inspection fee before seeing the car?

No. Never. Not to "hold" the car, not to "book an inspection", not because the owner is travelling. A genuine seller shows you the car and its papers first. Every deposit scam in Lagos starts with a reason why you must pay before you look.

If a seller asks for money before a viewing, stop, and report the listing.

What are the warning signs of a scam?
  • A price well below every comparable listing.
  • Pressure to pay a "commitment", "booking" or "inspection" fee before you see the car.
  • The owner is abroad, in another state, or "sending a driver"; someone other than the owner will collect payment.
  • Photos that look like a showroom catalogue or that you find on other sites; refusal to send a fresh photo of a specific detail you ask for.
  • Papers that are "with the customs agent", "being renewed", or in a different name that will be "changed after payment".
  • A request to pay to a third party's account, to a POS agent, or through a payment link or "escrow" the seller chose.
  • The chat moves to a new number, or the seller wants to meet somewhere you cannot leave easily.

Any one of these is enough to walk away. Report the listing so we can hold it.

How do I view a car safely?
  • Daylight, in a public place you choose: a bank car park, a fuel station forecourt, a shopping centre. Not a private compound and not after dark.
  • Bring someone. Tell a third person where you are going and which listing.
  • Ask for a cold engine when you arrive; a warmed-up engine hides starting, smoke and cooling problems.
  • Match the VIN on the chassis, the engine bay and the papers to each other and to the listing.
  • Drive it, on the kind of road you use, with the seller in the car.
  • Pay a mechanic you chose to inspect it before you commit. In Lagos that costs less than one bad tyre.
Which papers should I check before paying?

Proof of ownership in the seller's name, vehicle licence, roadworthiness, insurance, the customs papers for a Tokunbo car, and a change-of-ownership form the seller is ready to sign. Check the VIN and engine number on every document against the car. If the name on the papers is not the person in front of you, ask why, in writing, and be ready to walk.

How should I pay?

Only after you have seen the car, the papers and the person, and only at the handover. Pay into the account of the person named on the papers, by bank transfer you make yourself, and keep the confirmation. Do not carry large cash to a viewing, do not pay a third party, and do not use an escrow service or payment link the seller suggested. We do not provide escrow; anyone claiming to be "Lagos Car Dealers escrow" is a scam.

Get a signed sales agreement and the change-of-ownership form at the same time as the keys.

I am a seller. How do I protect myself from fake buyers?
  • Speak on the phone before any viewing; a real buyer will talk.
  • Meet in daylight in a public place; bring someone; keep the keys and papers with you.
  • Go on the test drive. Do not hand over the car for a "quick drive around".
  • Overpayment is always a scam: a buyer who "accidentally" pays too much and wants the difference back, or who wants you to pay a "transfer charge" to release funds.
  • Confirm a bank transfer in your own banking app, not from a screenshot or an SMS. Hand over keys and signed papers only once the money is in your account.
How do I report a listing or a seller?

Every listing has a Report control. Choose the reason (scam, wrong details, already sold, duplicate, abusive, other), add what you saw, and send. Reports go to our moderation team; a listing confirmed as a scam is removed and every other listing from that seller is reviewed. You can report without an account.

If money has already changed hands, also report to the police and your bank as soon as you can; a fast report is the one that recovers funds.

What does the platform actually do to protect me?
  • Sellers must confirm a phone number by SMS code before they can list.
  • Moderation reviews listings and holds anything that fails checks; a held listing leaves search and browse until it is fixed.
  • A report control on every listing, read by a person, with confirmed scams removed and the seller's other listings reviewed.
  • Field guides written for Lagos: papers, inspection, pricing, safe viewing, Tokunbo versus Nigerian-used.

What we do not do, and will not claim: hold money, inspect cars, certify papers, verify identity beyond the phone, or guarantee any transaction. When we add a checkable service (an inspection partner, a licensed escrow rail) it will appear on the listing as what it is, with a date.

Selling a car

Listing is free. Here is exactly how it works, what the limits are, and what gets a listing held.

How do I list a car?

Sign in with your phone, open Sell, and answer the listing assistant's questions about the car you already know: make, model, year, mileage, condition, price, where buyers can see it. Add photos. Review the draft, correct anything, and publish. Nothing goes live until you tap publish, and you can edit afterwards.

How many cars and photos can I list?

A free account can have 1 live listing with up to 5 photos. A dealer plan raises that to 100 live listings with up to 20 photos each. Sold, paused and deleted listings do not count against the limit.

What are the photo requirements?

JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF, up to 5 MB each. Photos must be of this car, taken by you: no catalogue images, no screenshots, no photos with phone numbers, prices or logos written on them, and no photos that already appear in another listing. The first photo is the one buyers see in search.

Eight angles sell a car: front three-quarter, rear three-quarter, both sides, dashboard with the odometer showing, front and rear seats, engine bay, tyres. Dusk light is kindest to paintwork.

When does a listing get held, and how do I fix it?

Your listing goes live when you publish it. Our team reviews listings after publication and holds one when something is off: wrong category, a price that makes no sense for the car, photos that are not yours or appear elsewhere, contact details in the photos or title, a duplicate of a car already listed, a vehicle that cannot legally be sold, or a report we have confirmed. A held listing leaves search and browse and shows "Under review" in your dashboard.

Fix the listing from the dashboard; the fields stay editable while it is held. Once it passes it goes back to active.

How do I edit, pause, mark as sold, or delete a listing?

All four are on the listing's row in your dashboard. Edit changes any field. Pause takes it out of search while you keep it; Resume puts it back. Sold closes it and tells buyers it has gone; please do this the day you sell, it is the single thing that most helps the next buyer. Delete removes it from the site immediately.

How long does a listing stay live?

Until you mark it sold, pause it, or delete it. We do not silently expire listings. A listing that is still live months later with no answer to buyers is what reports are for, so keep yours current.

I published, but I cannot find my listing on Browse. Why?

Three usual reasons. It is paused or marked sold (check the status in your dashboard). It is held for review (it will say "Under review"). Or it is simply below the fold: Browse sorts Featured cars first, then newest, and a page holds a limited number. Search for your exact make and model to find it, or feature it to put it at the top.

What sells a car faster?
  • A title that says what it is: year, make, model, trim, Tokunbo or Nigerian-used.
  • A price inside the band of comparable cars, and a line about why (service history, new tyres, one owner).
  • All eight photo angles, in daylight, with the odometer readable.
  • The exact area where buyers can see it, and the hours you are usually there.
  • Answer messages within the hour. Buyers move on.
  • Mark it sold the day it goes.
Will my phone number be shown on the listing?

No. Buyers reach you through "Message seller", and you reply in Messages. Your number is used only to sign you in and is never shown to buyers. We never allow phone numbers in photos, titles or descriptions, and moderation holds listings that include them.

Payments and Studio

How paying works, and what Studio makes for your listing.

How do I pay for Featured, a plan, or Studio credits?

Through Paystack, on a checkout page Paystack hosts; we never see or store your card. Card, bank transfer and USSD are the usual options Paystack shows Nigerian customers. Prices are in naira, include no hidden fees, and the amount shown on our page is the amount charged.

My payment failed or the service did not activate. What now?

If Paystack shows the payment as failed, nothing was charged; try again or use another method. If it shows as successful but your dashboard does not show the window or credits within a few minutes, message support with the Paystack reference (it starts with LCD) and we put it right from the transaction record. A payment is only ever applied once, so a retry cannot double-charge you.

Can I get a refund?

A Featured window or plan starts the moment it is paid and runs its full term, so time already run is not refundable. A charge for something that never activated is refunded in full: send the Paystack reference. Unspent Studio credits can be refunded on request; spent credits cannot.

What is Studio?

Studio makes showroom-grade photographs and a short hero video for a listing from the photos you already took. It is optional and paid in credits: a showroom photo costs 1 credit, a hero video costs 5. Every account starts with 2 free credits; packs are ₦2,500 for 10, ₦6,000 for 30 and ₦15,000 for 100.

Studio images are marked as showroom renders on the listing, next to your originals. Your original photos stay on the listing, because buyers should always be able to see the actual car.

Rules and support

What may not be listed, what happens to reports, and how to reach us.

What may not be listed?
  • Vehicles you do not own or are not authorised to sell.
  • Stolen, cloned-VIN or customs-uncleared vehicles, and vehicles with tampered odometers presented as genuine.
  • The same car listed more than once, or a placeholder listing for cars you do not have.
  • Listings that are really adverts for something else (financing, parts, services, another site).
  • Photos or text containing phone numbers, prices painted on, logos, other sites' watermarks, or images you did not take.

Listings that break these are held; confirmed fraud is removed along with the seller's other listings.

What happens after I report something?

A person reads it. If the listing plainly breaks the rules it is held at once. If it needs the seller's answer we ask for it. If it is a confirmed scam the listing is removed and the seller's other listings are reviewed. We do not send you a case number or a verdict yet; you will see the listing disappear.

How do I contact support?

For a listing, use the Report control on it; that reaches us fastest with the right context attached. For your own account or a payment, contact support with the listing link or the Paystack reference. Support hours are Lagos business hours; reports about scams are read first.

Still stuck?

For a listing, use the Report control on it. For your account or a payment, contact support with the listing link or the Paystack reference.
